Introduction of ROI

Our website's ROI is Region of Interest, which similar to Dapiya's Tropical Cyclone Floaters.

ROI enables task customization. Users can enter a valid latitude and longitude range to view satellite cloud images of the area. By uploading custom colormap, users can view infrared cloud images using their own colormap.

Currently these geostationary orbit meteorological satellites are supported: HIMAWARI-9, GK-2A (GEO-KOMPSAT-2A), GOES-19/18, MSG-2/3 (METEOSAT-9/10), and MTG-I1 (METEOSAT-12).

We will also support more geostationary orbit meteorological satellite data in the future, so stay tuned.

ROI Tasks and Rules

To create a new ROI task, click Create ROI in the navigation bar. A window will pop up, then you should enter the range and confirm.

After creating an ROI task, you will have a 120-hour retention period (calculated from the task creation time).

If you haven't changed the task creation time for 48 hours after creating it, the system will stop drawing the task but retain its archive. All archives corresponding to this task ID will be deleted after the retention period expires.

Each task modification will reset your task creation time and ROI token. If you modify an ROI task more than five times and the number of archives associated with that task is greater than five, the system will delete the archive with the oldest modification time.

To manipulate an existing ROI task, right-click (single-click on mobile) in the My ROI tasks table area, then action options will appear.

Be Care:

  1. Please be sure to enter the ROI task information according to the format in the input box. If you cannot see the format, please refer to it here: latmin, latmax, lonmin, lonmax.
  2. Each user can only create up to 3 ROI tasks, and the ROI system has a limit of 30 tasks. Intersection detection will be performed before a task is submitted.
  3. Since ROI tasks have execution intervals, realtime cloud images and their archives are usually available several minutes after the task is created.
  4. Please be careful when handling ROI tasks to avoid accidental deletion. Deleting an ROI task will delete all archived files corresponding to this task ID.

Custom Colormap and Rules

You can edit the colormap yourself in the given format in the edit box; you can also upload a colormap file and the window will automatically process the content.

Before uploading, you must test the colormap you wrote. Only after passing the test can you upload the colormap. Otherwise, a pop-up window will be displayed indicating the error content.

Each user can only have one custom colormap. If you upload multiple times, the last uploaded custom colormap will be used.

Other ROI Tasks

This function will randomly select some ROI tasks from all users and publish them to the Other ROI Tasks table for a recommandation. Available operations include: Realtime Imagery and ROI Task Archive.

Real-time Imagery and Archive Page

Right-click (single-click on mobile devices) in the table area of My ROI tasks and click Realtime Imagery. The browser will open a new tab and redirect to the Realtime Imagery page.

All functions on this page are basically the same as those on the Floater page. Clicking ROI Archive will jump to the archive of the corresponding task, and ROI Public will jump to the public ROI task page.

Public ROI Tasks

These tasks are for tracking any un-numbered invest areas, severe weather, extratropical systems, and other important events globally. If you wish to place one somewhere, contact site admins.

The difference between public ROI tasks and custom ROI tasks is that public ROI tasks are not archived, while custom ROI tasks are. Therefore, we generally recommend using the custom ROI task feature.
